Friday Fave Five, Mid January Edition

It's Friday and time for

1. The Professor gave me Saturday last weekend just to play. And he drove. Farmers Market. Coffee. Thrift Stores. Used Book Stores. Beach.

2. Speaking of Thrift Stores and Used Book Stores, I have to say I scored, and scored BIG. Besides finding an Elizabeth Goudge book (currently reading) and a couple of children's favorites I wanted to add to my children's literature bookshelves (Best Christmas Pageant Ever, Betsy, Tacy and Tib, Understood Betsy), I picked up ten (yes, TEN) more Newbery Award books. It is a life goal of mine to own and read all the Newbery Award titles. Since the award was started in 1922, that's a lot of children's books. The books I added to my bookshelf were

2000 Bud, Not Buddy
1980 A Gathering of Days: A New England Girl's Journal
1977 Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry
1967 Up a Road Slowly
1959 The Witch of Blackbird Pond
1958 Rifles for Watie
1949 King of the Wind
1941 Call It Courage
1938 The White Stag
1929 The Trumpeter of Krakow

3. Still speaking of books, I was the delighted recipient of these two volumes when the mother of one of my tutoring students gifted them to me from her bookshelves.

4. I have alluded to the unseasonably warm weather we have been having, temperatures in the 80s all this week. The camellias are bursting with blooms.

5. A four day weekend to look forward to!

That book - The White Stag - rings a bell. I must check my bookshelves, or my memory!

If I'm ever in your neck of the woods, I shall personally deliver a copy of my novel.

oh

my

be still my heart.

Goudge, Lovelace, Canfield and 10 Newbery Award books?

and the beach??

and thrift stores???

I don't know how it could get more perfect.

That's a good goal - I wonder how many Newberys I have? I should check my shelves.

Happy Weekend Willow! Enjoy your treasures.

We've been having pretty warm weather but were hot by a cold front this week. Today was the coldest yet, 13 degrees when I took my son to school!! I love camellias but don't have any yet -- hope to soon.

Sounds like a wonderful last weekend!

Wow, what neat books from your student's mother!

And good books at sale prices are a treasure.

Lyrical sunset photo! Did you scamper around to get just the right angle and direct the people into the reflections to get it so perfect? Or did you just get to the right place at the right time and go click?

What a splendid play day for you! You deserve it.

What a great week! I need to do more thrift store shopping. I am jealous, though, that you have temps in the 80's! Our high today is to be 13 degrees! I'm glad I don't live in the midwest. They get temps in the negatives! Like -35. BRRRR!

Good morning! Love the sunset shot with the island showing. It's always great to have it clear enough to see the Channel Islands. You really scored with books this week. Enjoy L.A. today and the rest of your 4 day weekend!!

Wow Willow - you were Johnny on the Spot today - you are the first Friday Fave entry!

I think your goal is wonderful! I have started collecting children's books too - to read to my grandbabies. I found "The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew" the other day - one of my favorite childhood books! I can't wait to read it to my grandchildren.

Books and beaches sound absolutely divine!

Your last Saturday is my idea of a perfect day! Have you ever been to the Farmer's Market in Santa Monica on Wednesday mornings. It's a great one and my fav. Better in the Spring, though. Still wonderful all year.

I recall having read and been intrigued by The White of Blackbird Pond. When you read it give us a recap to refresh my memory!!!

Those are some great faves :) I particularly love the list of books - many of those are on my shelf, or are on my list of books to put on my shelf...

I love collecting children's literature too Willow. There has been a lot of discussion lately in the literary world about Newbery Medal winning books not being racially inclusive and too difficult to read. If I can find the article I'll send it to you.

The camellia looks so pretty! It will be a long time before we see them here.

Hugs, Pat

Hello Willow......

The Professor certainly knows how to indulge a girl...... what a perfect weekend.

I’m unfamiliar with a quite a few books in your list, but I do have first hand experience of of seeing The Trumpeter of Krakow as he played his abruptly ended fanfare to the four winds, high above the market square in Krakow.

Have a good weekend.... what fantastic weather you are enjoying. Marion

Today we have a sunny 8C instead of a drizzly 8C (45F ish?) so it feels better than it has in a while.

I love new books too- you know you are setting out on an adventure when you start.

Beautiful camilla.

What a wonderful day. I think I've told you before that when my kids were little, I had a goal to read all of the Newbery Award winners to them. I gave up that goal after I figured out that some of the later ones were too "political" and that we'd never make it anyway. I loved the earlier ones though and many of the runners up.

Also loved the Betsy-Tacy books and Understood Betsy. I've been meaning to read some of Dorothy Canfield's adult book again. I remember enjoying them as a "bookworm" teenager.

Have read all but the 2000 and 1929 books and oh! some of them several times. Roll of Thunder was gripping, Rifles for Watie was a favorite when I was 11 or 12, Call it Courage - I still have the dog-eared copy my brother and I read way back. The author of White Stage, Kate Seredy was my very favorite author starting with The Chestnut Tree when I was 9. I read her books out loud to my kids and still cried as an adult!

I found Pat's comment very sad, that they're too difficult is just plain wrong! What are we doing to our kids that they can't read and be pulled into these wonderful stories by fourth, fifth or sixth grade?? Shoot, I was reading some of them to my kids when they were much younger and they'd beg me to keep reading. But then, I pretty much stayed with the older books. The newer ones for the most part aren't as thoughtfully, deeply written. The few more current ones I've read were either too overboard and "in-your-face" or pandering to popular opinions.

Which Elizabeth Goudge book did you find??? I loved her trilogy.
