Square Feet

In my friend's garden,
orange, blue and yellow grow
with green vegetables.

Peppers hang out with
marigolds and lobelia
and other blossoms

summer squash snuggles
in its silver steel wire cage
butter yellow blooms

purple green lettuce
tomatillos vines climbing
clinging to wood poles

happy sunflower
raises its face to the sun
in my friend's garden.

  2. I understand that marigolds make the bugs feel less welcome, and the Indian "three sisters" system of planting, where you grow corn, beans and squash in the same mound, and the beans climb the cornstalks and the squash leaves shade out the weeds is good agriculture for small spaces. So what's the grid all about?

    Great post and wonderful photos!

  3. Hi Willow!! Gorgeous photos of this beautiful garden. I so wish I had a place for a small garden. Photography is also one of my passions. It was so interesting to hear you have done inner-city ministry! What a small world. ♥

  9. That is special. Recently heard of the idea of mixing vegetables with flowers, (a gentle dream of mine) such a good idea. I also like Roxie's educational addition. Who knew? Special, x.

  10. Your friend has done a wonderful job...so beautiful.

I suppose one must replenish the soil with nourishment before next Spring's planting. I think of this because I planted in the same garden area too many times, and my plants didn't do well. (So much for trying to save some money.) This year my tomatoes are on vitamins.
