Happy Independence Day!
July 4th, 2009
When they put their signatures on 'the line', the signers of the American Declaration of Independence did not know whether they were actually signing their death notices or an historic document that would change the course of Old and New World history. We know, and we thank them today for their courage, their audacity, their determination.Celebrate thoughtfully.

ReplyDeleteHappy 4th of July to you too. I love how Nickolas Cage sums it up on National Treasure....that if we would have lost then the men would have been tried for treason and goes into the specifics of what that meant.

ReplyDeleteA visiting priest from Liberia gave his homily on Sunday and told us how Liberia has adopted our government and has seen their own revolution, and is especially thankful to Americans for providing educational materials so that they could learn. In hard times like this we forget that we have had good influence in the world and have made lots of children's lives so much richer and full! Happy 4th!

ReplyDeleteIt's a bit ironic but I usually rewatch the Gettsyburg mini series staring Tom Berenger, Jeff Daniels, Martin Sheen at this time of year (the battle was fought over the 4th). It's based on the novel The Killer Angels and I find it really powerful - as was the book if you haven't read it.
