Friday Fave Fives, November, Week Three

Happy Friday.  That means Friday Fave Fives.  Being grateful is a discipline.  I think that is a great way to look at gratitude.  We discipline ourselves and practice seeing the good and being thankful for even the hard things.  That's gratitude.  (credit to Becoming Minimalist blog for reminding me of that this week)  This weekly exercise helps me to discipline my mind and heart to be thankful.  Thankful for even the rainy days we had this week.  Here are five things that stood out to me in my week.

1.  On Saturday, we realized that there was nothing! nothing! on our calendar.  So we jumped in our car and drove to a State Park about an hour's drive away.  The weather was perfect for a hike in the woods.  After stopping to pick up coffee and a snack at the cutest little coffee shop, we hiked a couple of miles tromping through the fallen leaves and sometimes walking the trail paralleling a lake.  It was a great way to spend our free day.

2.  Veteran's Day.  Or Remembrance Day.  Our friends T and S met us at Denny's for breakfast.  Because our guys are both veterans, their breakfast meal was free.  We had the best time celebrating our veterans.  While we were sitting in the booth drinking our coffee, a young girl and her mother walked up to us and asked if they were veterans, thanked them for their service and gave them each a paper that the girl had colored with crayons saying "Thank you!"  It was so sweet and made their day so much brighter.

3.  Happy Anniversary to our son and daughter-in-law!  Eighteen years!  (old photo, but one of my favorites)  Yes, they were married on Veteran's Day :)

4.  Another hike.  This time with Younger Daughter (the nurse) and the dogs.  We were walking one of the local paved paths and noticed a side trail off to the left.  Of course we had to take the detour.  It was so much fun to explore somewhere new!  And beautiful.

5.  We have a good friend from our Los Angeles days who lives and ministers in Southeast Asia.  Her mother and brothers live not that far from us.  She is in the US visiting her mom right now and we arranged to have lunch with her and her mom.  What a privilege for us to spend that precious time with her.  Of course, we were so busy talking that we didn't remember to take any pictures.

Bonus:  I took photos of the two items I have knitted for the baby shower later this month.  Because the new little girl will be born near Christmas time, I am hoping to finish a red newborn size sweater for her, too.  It's so much fun knitting for babies!

The sweaters are lovely. Some mother will be very pleased to receive them.
Even without amazing colors, the fall walks looked very enjoyable.
That’s a great photo of your son and his beautiful wife. They have been married the same number of years as my daughter and husband (the ones that live here). Do you remember being married that many years and how young we were?! Mary

It IS a discipline... which becomes a natural way of thinking. How many years have we been doing FFF? It's wonderful.

Hurray for a free day to hike at a nice spot and a treat afterwards. How sweet to have others honor your loved ones on Veteran's Day. And to have a visit with from your friends.

So cute, that little sweater with the two buttons! Both are adorable.

What beautiful knit sweaters. One lucky soon to be born baby!

Gratitude is definitely a spiritual discipline. Love it.
How awesome you were able to get in TWO hikes this past week! I did walking every day and just one hike but it was a mountain climb so I really worked those thigh muscles and heart. hahah
I love the pic of you and hubby.
My dad and mom used to go to Denny's and he was a veteran too and so would get the free meal. they also went every friday evening. How I miss them but how grateful I am to my daddy for leaving me with fond memories and his korean war stories. Thank you to your husband, too for his service to our country.
I hope you have a good weekend...send the rain up our way...we need it badly!

Hi Willow! Those baby items are precious! What lovely gifts! So glad that you had a nice week and were able to spend time with your friends. As always, I love the trails you have around your home. It's always nice to have a "free" day to do whatever you want! I am glad that you had a good week - now enjoy a nice weekend. See you again soon!

Happy Belated Veterans Day to your hubby and your friend! How wonderful that they were honored at Denny's with a free breakfast, and even better, the sweet little girl who drew pictures for them! How nice that she is being taught to honor veterans at her young age! Veterans Day was also our kids' anniversary. They didn't do anything special that day, but we did go out to lunch with them a couple days later and helped them celebrate. I guess they've been married long enough now (just 7 years) that they don't mind having the parents come along for their celebration! LOL. Looks like you took some very nice walks. I love walking in the fall...it's just extra special! Those sweaters are so sweet! What a blessed little baby who will get to wear those! I hope you have a lovely rest of your weekend! Enjoy this nice weather while it lasts!

Happy anniversary to your son and daughter-in-law! Beautiful baby sweaters. I remember when my daughters were babies and had a friend knit them beautiful sweaters. It is such a cherished thing to receive a hand knit gift.

I love to see your knitting projects. My daughter who was just visiting with me is a voracious knitter and was working on a top that she hand dyed the yarn for!
Such lovely places to hike! I live in the foothills of the Smokies and when I get more leg strength, I want to get out there.
You asked in your comment on my blog about my daughter and son in law's move to France. It's a person preference. They visited the Alsace region in 2023 and fell in love. My son in law recently retired and my daughter is an editor and works online so they can be more mobile. I'm excited for them but a bit nervous about they being so far away.

What a nice week you have had. How sweet of that little girl to make the thank you colorings for your veterans. Happy anniversary to your son and d-i-l. Yes, one definitely has to explore a hidden path! Such nice walks you had. Love the sweaters for the baby. And thanks for joining in so many years with me trying to develop that discipline of gratefulness!
