Whimsical Windows, Delirious Doors

Windows and doors can tell the observer much about the geographical setting of the home to which they are attached.
I wondered why this doorstep was enclosed and faced the direction it did.  At first I figured it was merely an architectural statement.

Then I passed this craftsman style home with only half of its porch enclosed with windows.  It dawned on me.  Since the prevailing winds blow from the beach which is mere blocks away, these doors are being protected from the wind and rain.  A lyrical answer to a prosaic problem.

On the other hand, banks of windows open to the front of a home indicate that the owners enjoy the view across the road and ignore the wind.

I would, too.  Wouldn't you?

I really like the second photo. It is as if the building is creeping slowly towards the pavement, like an expanding telescope. Perhaps the house is lonely and wants to chat with the pedestrians.

I vote for windows with wide-open views!

Such beautiful architectural solutions. I love that you shared them because I'm not familiar with that part of California.

I prefer the older craftsman styles, the tile roofs and variety of window shapes are to behold. You can try to match the styles of these today - however, the original style is supurb!

Love Redondo Beach! Such a wild mix of styles and colors all crammed cheek-by-jowl!

Pre-air-conditioning, you needed a wide, shady, airy porch to survive the summer. Modern homes give you just a whisp of shelter to keep off the rain while you dig for your keys. Ah for the good old days.
