Settling in to Summer

Although we are still experiencing June Gloom most days here in Coastal Southern California, it is obviously SUMMER.

Thank you to all of you who expressed concern and care for me last week.  I am feeling much better and the bruising and swelling are nearly gone.  Although I still have lots of stitches in my gums, I almost feel 'normal'.

1.  It's those longer evenings when we walk and it's still light out.

2.  BIRTHDAY!  The Professor celebrated a milestone birthday.  Remembering how their mother gave each child a penny per year per week for allowances, The Professor's sister presented him with the appropriate number of pennies to celebrate.

3.  He chose dinner.  Persian cuisine.  Oh yum!
No photos because, well, we ate it.

4.  I am finished with one summer project.  I decided that I wanted to knit down my stash of two different yarns that had been building up in my yarn drawers.  Lots and lots of hats.

Adult hats

Kid sized hats

Now I have plenty of hats to sell at the various venues where I'll be spinning this autumn.

4.And this is how much of one kind of yarn--the remnants fit into a quart sized baggie.

5.   This retired thing means that we do most of our errands together.  That means library, grocery store, some meetings, and one final trip to the university.
The Professor waited a couple of weeks to access some files he wanted to finish and save because other people were using the particular computers he needed (don't ask me; it was all Greek to me)
While he was in his office, I wandered outside to enjoy the beauty of the campus.
Before this property was a state university, it was a state mental hospital.  The original buildings were built in California Mission style and the university has chosen to keep as many buildings as possible and renovate them.  It's a stunningly beautiful place! He will miss teaching there (but not the grading!).

Bonus:  As we head into the Fourth of July weekend, I am thankful for the liberties I have as an American.  I do not say that lightly.  The freedom I experience is not really a right but a privilege.

Do you have plans for the holiday?

Happy birthday to your hubby! We've had to divide and conquer errands for so long, I can't imagine doing most of them together again. I guess we'll find out in a few years. :-)

I've been missing here for a few weeks so just been back to check out your oral drama! Glad to know you're feeling better but sounds like it was a real ordeal. I dread going to the dentist. Happy birthday to your hubby and have a good weekend.

So glad you are healing well! I am glad you had a happy birthday celebration with your hubby. Your stitching is admirable! I am grateful for our freedom also. We will probably celebrate at home with family and friends and a picnic outside. Happy 4th! xx

That only counts as ONE project? It looks like at least 30 by my count! lol. How wonderfully gratifying to knit down your stash!

Oh, yum on the birthday dinner. And happy belated wishes to the Professor.

The university campus is quite lovely. And it has quite an interesting history. Do any of the buildings give off a creepy ambiance?

Have a marvelous 4th. And I agree, our freedom is a privilege indeed.

Fun penny tradition. I am glad you are healing nicely. Nice stack of hats. Persian? We love our Persian and today we stopped at a Persian bakery and then I got Persian takeout for dinner. Delicious. Happy 4th Celebrations to you and yours. I think we'll be having a low key small group here on the 4th.

I always enjoy seeing California mission style architecture! Maybe because it is my home state. So glad you are doing well and enjoying retirement together. I look forward to hearing what your next knitting project will be. Mary

So glad you are better after surgery. Congrats on completing some of your projects! Persian food sounds terrific for a birthday celebration.

Drove up to Santa Barbara this past weekend and thought of you as we passed by Camarillo. The university campus looks beautiful from your photos.

Oh I someday want to see the CA mission style buildings!! on the 4th we flew home from Italy!!! Rome was......well...let's just say I prefer Paris, but the trip was wonderful and our youngest was so happy to have this vacation with us before starting work on Monday and then in just about 7 weeks she will be off to college for the first time!! I'm getting choked up just writing this :)

Looks like you had a lovely week....it is just perfect here in NYS this time of year...windows open, sunshine, blue skies and I have the rest of the week off before summer school begins on Monday. I hope you enjoy the rest of this week!!

I just discovered your blog and found out you also live in Camarillo. We moved here 2 1/2 months ago from Atlanta. Look forward to reading about your life.

The mission style buildings are so graceful, so lovely. Never heard of the penny per year allowance idea. It's a good one. Fourth of July was spent enjoying simple pleasures of living in a tiny town: old-fashioned parade, BBQ put on by the firemen, and a quilt/craft show. Not a sale, just a show of what talent lies in our community. Quite a bit, actually. I appreciate the freedom we enjoy and pray we can keep it. xo
