Hello, February

In the bleak midwinter...

1.  Here we are in cold, cold midwinter.  As I write this, it is snowing.  The temperature is a balmy 31F.  But in the night, it will be half of that.  This is the time I look for things to warm me, my feet, my tummy, my spirit.  Friday Fave Fives is an encouraging way to cheer us all up.

2.  The grandkids had a snow day (actually, more than one; and today is another).  Younger Daughter was working from home and took a long lunch so she could take her two sledding.  We joined them.  Yes, we sledded.

Younger Daughter's Bernese Mountain dog was in doggie heaven.

3.  After sledding, The Professor treated us to hot chocolate!  Yum!  Making memories!

4.  I made another pair of socks!  Nothing cheers like warm feet covered in handknit socks.

5.  I am a total garden geek.  This winter I have been growing ginger indoors.  I had no idea if the ginger I had bought at the grocery store and accidently let sprout would grow.  But I tried.  And guess what!  All four rhizomes I planted in pots are sprouting and growing.  Squeee!

That tiny green sprout will turn in to a tall tall plant.
Yes, that is what a ginger plant looks like.

These are five things that have warmed my heart (and feet) this week.  I am thankful, even in the bleak midwinter.

I am amazed by the ginger!! I had no idea. Reminds me of when we used to grow avocado 'trees' in college. I don't think any of the plants ever made it to tree stage.

Sledding and hot cocoa:) Sounds wonderful!

Definite ginger excitement! I hear ginger flowers are very pretty.

I like the sound of a longer lunch break to go sledding! It's quite warm here (as you might expect).

That sledding sure looks fun. I did not know about ginger and that you could grow it. I love your handknit socks. Hope you have a good weekend. See you again soon.

What a nice week! I used to take hot chocolate in a thermos when we went sledding (even though it was only 10 minutes away). I like your colorful socks. Wool socks DO keep your feet warmer. I’m in the middle of knitting a baby blanket using a knitted lace border. Mary

How interesting that you were able to grown your ginger. I never thought to do that. Sledding, how fun. That is something I really miss from the kids childhood. I used to love to go sledding with them and we always finished it off with hot chocolate too. Those knit socks are perfect for your new reality of cold winters.

YOur ginger plant looks like my bamboo plant!! How cool to grow your own! this year I"m planning on growing my own basil again. It's been a few years since I"ve done Deck Container gardening.

We are back to temps between 32-40 so the snow we got MOnday into tuesday is melting. But supposed to get cold again. I"m ok with it. I have 5 days of teaching this week and then we leave school at 1 pm Friday and have the whole next week off for Winter break!! YAY!!!

I love that you took the kids sledding and had hot cocoa afterwards..reminds me of when my girls were little. I miss those kinds of days at times.

LOVE handknit socks....i'm wearing some right now that a local artisan made (local to the Adirondacks I mean). They're perfect for me today as I plan on heading out to walk one of the bike path trails this afternoon.

have a happy rest of the weekend!

The sledding looks like fun, and hot chocolate afterward is wonderful. How neat that the ginger sprouted and is growing.

Sledding with your grandkids sounds like bliss, cold bliss but bliss none the less. Stay warm.

Bleak Midwinter or Deep Midwinter, is the time for following Nature. -smile- Do as Nature is now down doing.... Hunkering down, getting more sleep, taking good care of ourselves, resting in preparation for the business of coming Spring.

And super, that you are able to get out and enjoy this cold time of year, with your family!
