What Makes Me Smile

Daily, I remind myself to smile and be thankful for the blessings in my simple life.  Knowing that I will be sharing them every Friday through Friday Fave Five helps me concentrate on those positive things.

Thank you for your expressions of concern regarding the pain I have been experiencing.  Mostly, I am better and improving enough to be able to return to my daily walks.

When I hear the news that The New Boy is ripping through his addition and subtraction flashcards, the teacher in me cheers.  His Mama is a scientist/engineer, so it ought not to be surprising that as an almost five year old he understands numbers.

Another thing that encourages my inner teacher is the comment about the little girl who lives at my daughter's house, "Miss T read five words tonight!"

The Grad Student celebrated his birthday this week.  Well, celebrated is a stronger word than what actually happened.  I should say that his birthday was acknowledged.  Texts, emails and phone calls stated, "Happy Birthday!"  I gave him a consumable gift--his very own box of our favorite whole wheat pita chips with my promise to not eat even one chip from 'his box'.  When I remember his birth, I still marvel and am so very thankful for his life and health.  We were living in the jungle with only helicopter access to the nearest town and medical help.  I had malaria.  Mission Aviation Fellowship pilots heroically flew to pick us up and take us to the mission hospital where he was born a month before his due date.  But because of God's grace and mercy, we were both fine.  He has always excelled in anything he puts his mind and attention to doing. And he is thriving in his chosen field of study as an anthropologist.

Flowers blooming in my garden in January cheer me up.  Camellias are busting out all over.

The small white blossoms of the lenten rose have opened.

What's making you smile this week?

Glad you are doing OK, Willow... And New Boy is on to math & number cards?! Wow... the time goes fast. LOVELY floral beauty today. We're frozen over here, no flowers but florist flowers. ;o) Happy Weekend ((HUGS))

Thanks for the flower pictures Willow - they make me smile too. It's nice to think of them blooming at your place even though it's a frozen world here.

I can remember when you announced New Boy's arrival - oh my - and now he's reading?! What a bright mind. I love those teacher moments too.

A belated Happy Birthday to your son! The testimony of his birth is amazing - God's hand was, and is, on both of you.

Thankful that your neck and shoulder pain is better. I've had a strained neck a few times and it's really tough. So glad you're able to get back to walking again.

Happy weekend!

Sorry you have been in pain, but I'm glad you can think of things to make you smile.

I'm glad the Lord has His hand on you back when your son was born. It is always so amazing to me how well preemies do later in life!

I'm so sorry about the pain you've been having! I am glad you're doing better.

Glad too the kids and grandkids are doing well in their pursuits. Wow, what a unique birth story -- can't imagine going through all of that with malaria, too!

It must be so nice to have things blooming this time of year! The lack thereof is one of the hardest parts of winter to me. I'd get a houseplant, but it wouldn't live, poor thing. :-) But I do buy flowers occasionally, or sometimes my son brings some.

Wish my lenten rose would get with the program! Pleased to hear that you are pain-free enough to walk. Isn't it wonderful that we can celebrate with each other with the latest technologies?

I was surprised to see that you did not even talk about knitting. I love hearing about the New Boy as he is the same age as my little boy who loves to read numbers, play Rook, and talk about the calendar months. They are so bright...
Hope you can return to you daily walking. I know it means alot to you.

I am still amazed by all of your adventures and stories-- I don't know if you ever told us that one about your son's birth. You are a very strong person to have been deep in a jungle while pregnant! And Malaria at the same time! Maybe you're just Superwoman and we don't know it! The flower photos take my breath away. And your grandson has inherited the family intelligence! It sounds like he has a great Mama who is good at teaching him!
